Weekly Geeks: 2009 - 43

I haven’t done a Weekly Geeks task in ages – but as this week’s task is about putting together a best of list I couldn’t resist. I’m pretty annoyed about the Times recent weak books of the decade list, which they then topped with their supreme loser list of best albums of the decade (Lily Allen beats out Muse?! Twilight is only three places behind the fantastic Carhullan Amy?! And have you seen what these people have to say about the Red Hot Chili Peppers – ridiculous!) so I thought I’d help contribute to the book blogger best of 2009 list. The problem is that I really haven’t read that many books that were originally published in 2009 (hardbacks are expensive, I need to get to the library more) so I can’t make a top ten list, but I have read four fabulous novels, published in 2009 that deserve to make the list:

'Wolf Hall' – Hilary Mantle (historical fiction, adult)
'Flygirl' – Sherri L Smith (historical fiction, young adult)
'Because I am Furniture' – Chalia Thaltas (novel in verse, young adult)
'Aphrodite’s Workshop for Reluctant Lovers' – Marika Cobbold (chick-lit, adult)

If you make up your own list and add the link to
Mr Linky you could find your own favourite books, published in 2009, making the list.

I haven't read a Marika Cobbold novel in about a decade! She published a couple of acclaimed novels and then seemed to disappear. I'll do my best of the year books in a bit, but I usually just list the best books I've read, regardless of publication - I so rarely read books the year they come out! And you remind me to get on with Wolf Hall.

I don't read many new books but I'm going to check my list and see. Off the top of my head I loved Ruth Reichl's Not Becoming My Mother: and Other Things She Taught Me Along the Way. It's a memoir that is so beautiful. Also perfect for the unbound challenge. I have plans to read Flygirl and I Am Furniture.

litlove yes didn't she write something with sushi in the title that was well recieved? This one was very good chick-lit, incredibly smart I thought (and the Times agreed with me this time). I'm going to do a best of the best list at the end of December as well, where everything I've read this year goes on trial! Btw yes get on with Wolf Hall, it is a Costa nominee now and everything! I am absolutely considering starting The Childrens Book any day now :0

Vasilly I think I read your review of that one and I love the title so it's more than likely on my list. Ah yay I get excited whenever anyone mentions reading Because I am Furniture - you're like the fourth blogger I've seen thinking about it.

Susan something is bound to slip to the bottom when you read as much as you do. I didn't realise you ahd a personal blog as well as Colour Online, added to my feedreader.
